How To Perform a Gwinnett County Marriage Records Search

There are many reasons you may need to access marriage records in Gwinnett County. In Gwinnett County, you can request a marriage record for any reason, and there is no restriction based on your relationship with the people listed on the record. If you’re seeking a way to access Gwinnett County marital records, you can perform a search with the Courts Online Portal.1

To conduct a search, you must first register for a free account by providing some basic information. Once logged in, select “Smart Search.”

On the next page, you will want to select the advanced filtering options. You can narrow your search to marriage records by selecting “Probate Court” for location and “Vital Records” for case type.

You can then enter a person’s name for the marriage record you are searching for. Other options to further narrow your results include setting a date of birth or filing date range. You can also narrow results down by selecting the gender or ethnicity of the person whose name you entered.

The results page will provide matching names, case numbers and addresses. You can then click on the three horizontal lines on the right-hand side for a detailed record.

To request a certified marriage application or certificate, you can do so by submitting a request to the Gwinnett County Probate Court.2

To make a request, you must complete the Gwinnett County Marriage Certificate Application Request Form.3 To complete this form, you will need to know the names of both parties to the marriage and the date they were married. Once you fill that in along with your contact info and the number of certificates you are requesting, you can mail the application and fee to the address below:

The fee for a marriage certificate or application is $10.00 per copy. If mailing the request, you can pay by check or money order made payable to Gwinnett County Probate Court. Cash or credit card is accepted if you go to the above address in person.

Gwinnett County also provides an online option for submitting an Open Records Request if you cannot obtain the record you sought through the Probate Court.

How To Acquire Archived Marriage Records in Gwinnett County

Often, there is a different process and even custodian for archived marriage records. These records are used for performing a genealogy search to learn more about one’s family history.

To access archived marriage records, you can check for documents in the custody of the Gwinnett County Probate Court.

Since Gwinnett County does not have a separate office or department for archives, you can follow the process outlined in the previous section on performing a search for marriage records in Gwinnett County.

Another option for archived marriage records is to conduct a search in various public libraries, historical societies or religious institutions that perform marriage ceremonies. You may uncover marriage indexes and other documentation of nuptials in a variety of documents, even including old newspapers.

They have many marriage records available on microfilm, dating all the way back to 1805. The Georgia Archives Office is available Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (closed 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM).

In the course of searching marriage records, you may be looking for information on other types of marital or related unions. While common law marriages are no longer allowed in Georgia, they were available and recognized prior to 1997. Domestic partnerships and civil unions are not recognized by any Georgia state law.

How To Find Georgia Marriage Records That Occurred Nearby or Outside of Gwinnett County

When trying to find marriage records outside Gwinnett County, a record seeker has a couple of options. Similar to Gwinnett County records of marriage, you could search directly with the county-level agency responsible for maintaining those documents. However, there is an alternative option to access marriage records throughout Georgia.

For accessing marriage records in every county in the state you can make a request through the Office of Vital Records for the Georgia Department of Public Health.7 This agency can provide certified marriage certificates and applications from June 1952 to August 1996.

While a marriage certificate is available to the general public, a copy of an application is only available to the bride and groom. They also provide marriage verifications from 2014 to the present which are available to anyone.

For a certified copy of a certificate or application, a person will have to complete the Request for Search of Marriage Form.8

An informational record can be requested by completing the Marriage Verification Request Form.

To complete either form, you will need to know the full name of the parties on the record, the date of the marriage and where the parties were married. In addition, the requester will have to provide their contact information, a shipping address and their relationship to the individuals identified for the marriage record.

Regardless of the type of record requested, the first copy costs $10.00, which is non-refundable even if the marriage document is not found. For each additional copy, you will be charged $5.00. For mail-in requests, you can only pay by money order or certified check made payable to the Georgia State Office of Vital Records.

How To Obtain a Marriage License in Gwinnett County

If you are looking to get married, the first thing you need to do is figure out how to obtain a marriage license. A couple can obtain a marriage license through the Gwinnett County Probate Court.

While residents can get a marriage license in Gwinnett County and get married anywhere in Georgia, nonresidents are required to exchange vows in the county they obtain the license from.

Marriage licenses can be obtained at the Probate Courts Vital Records Office, any time 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday. The office is located at the address below:

When you go to obtain your marriage license, you must appear at the same time as your partner. Both parties are required to provide proof of age (additional requirements for individuals under 17) through a government-issued identification such as a valid passport or driver’s license. If applicable, a certified divorce decree of either party’s most recent divorce or proof of death for a spouse must also be provided.

A marriage license costs $56.00. If both parties provide a certificate of completing an approved premarital education course within the past 12 months for a minimum of 6 hours, the fee is reduced to $16.00.
