How To Perform a Gwinnett County Marriage Records Search

There are many reasons you may need to access marriage records in Gwinnett County. In Gwinnett County, you can request a marriage record for any reason, and there is no restriction based on your relationship with the people listed on the record. If you’re seeking a way to access Gwinnett County marital records, you can perform a search with the Courts Online Portal.¹

To conduct a search, you must first register for a free account by providing some basic information. Once logged in, select “Smart Search.”

On the next page, you will want to select the advanced filtering options. You can narrow your search to marriage records by selecting “Probate Court” for location and “Vital Records” for case type.

You can then enter a person’s name for the marriage record you are searching for. Other options to further narrow your results include setting a date of birth or filing date range. You can also narrow results down by selecting the gender or ethnicity of the person whose name you entered.

The results page will provide matching names, case numbers and addresses. You can then click on the three horizontal lines on the right-hand side for a detailed record.

To request a certified marriage application or certificate, you can do so by submitting a request to the Gwinnett County Probate Court.²

While common law marriages are no longer allowed in Georgia, they were available and recognized prior to 1997. Domestic partnerships and civil unions are not recognized by any Georgia state law.

How To Find Georgia Marriage Records That Occurred Nearby or Outside of Gwinnett County

However, there is an alternative option to access marriage records throughout Georgia.

For accessing marriage records in every county in the state you can make a request through the Office of Vital Records for the Georgia Department of Public Health.⁷ This agency can provide certified marriage certificates and applications from June 1952 to August 1996.

While a marriage certificate is available to the general public, a copy of an application is only available to the bride and groom. They also provide marriage verifications from 2014 to the present which are available to anyone.

For a certified copy of a certificate or application, a person will have to complete the Request for Search of Marriage Form.⁸

To complete either form, you will need to know the full name of the parties on the record, the date of the marriage and where the parties were married. In addition, the requester will have to provide their contact information, a shipping address and their relationship to the individuals identified for the marriage record.

How To Obtain a Marriage License in Gwinnett County

If you are looking to get married, the first thing you need to do is figure out how to obtain a marriage license. A couple can obtain a marriage license through the Gwinnett County Probate Court.

While residents can get a marriage license in Gwinnett County and get married anywhere in Georgia, nonresidents are required to exchange vows in the county they obtain the license from.

When you go to obtain your marriage license, you must appear at the same time as your partner. Both parties are required to provide proof of age (additional requirements for individuals under 17) through a government-issued identification such as a valid passport or driver’s license.
